Australia's $2 trillion economy has only 4 big banks to take-up all commercial and investment finance. Nepal's economy of around $10 billion would not need 28 costly commercial banks, 37 development banks and 25 finance companies. The commercial banks number should be merged to maximum 5 in number by raising their paid-up capital to Rs.50 arab each. All competing development banks should be combined to make 1 infrastructural investment bank to finance infrastructural projects. The finance companies may be retained with increased 6 arb paid-up each to finance small enterprises in 3 districts each.

How it's possible....??
Among 28 commercial banks even if NRB makes Paid up capital to meet at 16 Arba (02 existing banks = 1 new bank after merger) the number comes to be at 14. Among them, RBB, NBL, ADBL, NIB, NABIL are seem to be capable of increasing paid up capital to double as of now (16 arba), within 03 years from their regular profit and with this the number of banks comes to be at minimum 16-17 provided that:
1) NRB makes minimum capital @16 arba
2) No further rights and FPOs will be entertained
3) Only 03 years time is given for capital increment through Bonus (stock dividend) or merger
4) A commercial bank should merger only with a commercial bank, and no Development Banks and Finance companies can be taken over by the commercial banks for this purpose

Otherwise, many commercial banks will go for merger or acquisition with Development Banks & Finance Companies. With this option, the number of Development Banks and Finance Companies will be reduced at larger, but still the number of commercial banks will not come down as expected.

So, to bring the number of Commercial Banks at 10-12, needs to go for following:

1) Paid up capital requirement of 20 arab
2) Mergers among the commercial banks only to be entertained (no Development Banks and Finance Companies to be allowed for merger with Commercial Banks)
3) Only 02 years time to be given
4) No further right shares and FPOs to be entertained.

So, the time will tell how this issue takes its momentum.....lets see........
